My Teaching Philosophy
I view English as an insight into different perspectives and ways of living. Literature is both a mirror and a window to the world. As a mirror, literature allows for the readers a level of self-reflection. As a window, literature is the best way to view, observe, and express the human experience. Consuming media from different cultures and regions allows you to interact and learn about completely foreign topics. It allows for a more worldly human experience. Choosing a secondary education path was natural for me. In a secondary classroom, students are coming into their own opinions and identities. I hope to help students solidify their own perspectives and personal voice through the literature I teach. As well as literature, writing is incredibly important to me. I believe everyone can write, and writing assignments should not be kept in the confines of a five paragraph essay. Alternative writing assignments are incredibly beneficial to student learning because the assignment is more engaging. Creative assignments, like character journals, help students connect more to the media, but also develop everyday writing skills. By offering my students a vast amount of experiences through a diverse and creative curriculum, they will acquire a more robust knowledge of the world around them and can come into their own identity as learners.
My teaching philosophy is rooted completely in my students, especially their growth. I believe in bringing in texts students can connect with emotionally. By presenting students with relatable texts, they are more likely to feel excited to learn. When you stick to the Western Canon, you are not choosing texts which all students can relate to. Presenting books and media featuring characters representative of their identities, where the setting is familiar to them, or dealing with themes of adolescence helps students see themselves represented in the classroom. I believe in the importance of using diverse texts within a curriculum, including texts that center characters of color or LGBTQ+ characters. This shows your students not only that they are not alone, but that you as a teacher truly care about their experiences and lives. I believe in a teaching philosophy of compassion, and I prioritize taking the time to truly connect with my students. My goal is to create a classroom community rooted in equity, understanding, and caring.
